Earlier this year we started work on the £35 million regeneration project to save the building after parts of it lay empty for more than a decade. We are transforming the much-loved building into a luxury 200-bedroom hotel, spa, conference and wedding venue.
The new hotel will celebrate the history of the building with all of its original artifacts and historic architecture protected and incorporated into the restoration. The scheme has won the backing of local Assembly Member Vaughn Gething and Wales Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates AM, who visited the site last week.
We will reveal the extent of the restoration and future plans for the building at the open day which is open to the general public between 10:00am – 4:00pm.
Signature Living founder, Lawrence Kenwright, the driving force behind a number of the UK’s biggest historic hotel developments, will give a talk about the project on the day. He will also be available to answer questions.
Lawrence said:
The open day is chance for the public to observe the great regeneration of The Coal Exchange and take a look at how this development will give the building a fantastic future while celebrating its illustrious past.
A great deal of effort is going into this restoration and we want to share that with local people. We are regenerating The Coal Exchange so the whole of Wales can be proud of it once again. I look forward to sharing my vision with people this Saturday.
We have also released new images of the restoration of The Coal Exchange’s Grand Hall. The famous hall was backdrop to the signing of the world’s first ever one million pound cheque and includes a First World War memorial.
The hall will itself become a focal point for the development and we know this will become Cardiff’s most high profile destination for weddings and events.
